how do you hire an independent sales agent through a recruitment agency?

A good sales agent comes with a client book, not just a CV. Muzzo gives your mandate to the headhunters who place most on this status: they check the sector covered and mandates already held. Fee of 5 to 30%, paid on hire. Leaves within 3 months: we restart the search free.

how it works

you only pay if you hire

  1. 01

    you describe the mandate

Using the form above: the sector, your company, your product range. The rest is scoped in your first conversation with the Muzzo team.

  2. 02

    our data chooses the headhunters

Our AI picks those who have hired the most independent sales agents, from more than 2,500 selected headhunters.

  3. 03

    you meet the best profiles

Approached and qualified by headhunters who are self-employed sales experts. You choose who you meet.

  4. 04

    you hire, then you pay

Not before. If your agent leaves the mandate within 3 months, we restart the search free.

let's talk about your role

one last question?

With Muzzo, you set the fee, between 5 and 30%, and you only pay it on hire: no deposit, no fixed fees. A sales agent in a regional sector and a key account agent with long sales cycles don't take the same search. The fee follows that difficulty, and the Muzzo team helps you set it.

You have a double guarantee. If the mandate ends within 3 months, for example because the real sector doesn't match the brief, we restart the search free. If no replacement is found within 4 months, we refund 50% of fees. On average, 94% of profiles hired via Muzzo are still in post after 3 months.

the reality

an independent sales agent is judged by the clientele they bring, not their CV

01

a good sales agent already works for other principals

They manage their own meetings and their own route. They won't answer a classic salaried job ad. A headhunter who knows this status knows where to find them and how to propose a mandate.

02

a good sales profile doesn't make a good agent

The status means accepting commission-only pay, managing your own business and sometimes representing several principals at once. The headhunter tests this autonomy, not just sales talent.

03

a hiring mistake shows up in the first quarter without orders

A poorly framed mandate or undefined sector costs both sides. The headhunter checks the client books already brought and mandates already run before introducing anyone.

the roles

the independent sales agent profiles our headhunters go after for you

From a first mandate to an established client book in a sector, each search goes to a headhunter who has already hired this profile.

  1. independent sales agent

Mandated by one or more companies, they prospect and sell in a defined geographic sector or product portfolio, paid on commission. The most requested profile.

  2. multi-mandate sales agent

They represent several non-competing principals at once, which lets them monetise the same route across multiple product ranges.

  3. key account sales agent

They negotiate with buying centrals or large structures, on long sales cycles and major volumes.

  4. real estate sales agent

Self-employed status, mandated by an agency or network, they prospect and guide transactions in a defined geographic sector.

  5. export sales agent

They represent a French principal abroad, or a foreign supplier in France, with strong knowledge of the target market's trade usages.

the method

a headhunter for self-employed sales, not an agency that does everything

An independent sales agent is judged by the clientele they bring, in a defined sector. So the method starts from that mandate.

01

we define the mandate and the sector covered

Geographic zone, product range, exclusivity or not, expected commission level: the brief describes the mandate the sales agent will run, and for whom.

02

a headhunter who places independent sales agents

From more than 2,500 selected headhunters, your mandate goes to those who place most independent sales agents and self-employed sales profiles.

03

a client book verified before the interview

The headhunter asks the profile to present mandates already held and clientele brought in a comparable sector. Then they cross-check with references from former principals.

hiring an independent sales agent: what you need to know

why use a headhunter to hire an independent sales agent?

The independent sales agent is a professional who, as their usual profession, negotiates and enters into sales contracts in the name and on behalf of producers, industrialists or merchants (French Commercial Code, article L134-1). They are not salaried: they choose their mandates, organise their route and are paid on commission from sales delivered.

A headhunter who knows this status can tell an already-mandated profile, with their own clientele, from a salaried sales rep looking for a classic job. This page covers the independent sales agent status itself; for the salaried sales rep, see our sales page.

why use a headhunter to hire an independent sales agent?

what is the difference between an independent sales agent and a salaried sales rep?

The salaried sales rep works for one company, under subordination, with a fixed salary often topped up with variable pay. The independent sales agent is self-employed: they register in the special agents register, can represent several non-competing principals, and are paid only on commission.

This status difference changes the mandate document you write: a sales agent contract sets the sector, any exclusivity and commission rate, rather than a classic employment contract. It also changes the profile you look for: an independent sales agent must know how to run their own business, not just sell.

what is the difference between an independent sales agent and a salaried sales rep?

how do you assess an independent sales agent at interview?

The CV lists sectors covered and product ranges sold. The interview needs to show something else: the clientele really brought in a comparable mandate, and how the agent organises their route between several principals if they have them.

Ask them to detail a previous mandate: the sector, the order volume brought, the length of the relationship with the principal. The headhunter does this first screen before introducing anyone, and checks with references from former principals the reality of the portfolio brought.

exclusive mandate or not: what should you choose?

An exclusive mandate reserves to the sales agent a sector or clientele, which commits them more but limits their freedom to represent competing principals. A non-exclusive mandate gives both sides more flexibility, at the cost of less commitment from the agent to your product range.

The choice depends on your sales strategy: a sector to conquer often justifies exclusivity, a complement to a product range on an already-active network suits a non-exclusive mandate. Clarify this choice in the brief before you talk commission.

the end of a sales agent mandate: what you need to plan for

When the mandate ends, except for the agent's gross fault, the French Commercial Code provides for a termination indemnity in the agent's favour (article L134-12). This point is negotiated and documented when you sign the mandate, not at the end.

Our headhunters flag this framework from the brief, to avoid misunderstandings when you hire: a well-drafted mandate protects both the principal and the independent sales agent.

your questions about hiring an independent sales agent

No. The independent sales agent is a self-employed professional who negotiates and enters sales contracts in your name, as their usual profession (French Commercial Code, article L134-1). There is no subordination link or employment contract: your relationship is founded on a sales agent mandate.

Wholly or almost entirely on commission from the sales they deliver, at the rate set in the mandate. Unlike a salaried sales rep, they have no guaranteed fixed salary by default: this is the first point to clarify with them before signing.

Yes, unless the mandate says exclusivity. It is actually common: many independent sales agents represent several non-competing principals to monetise the same route across different product ranges.

Overall, yes. According to France Travail's 2026 BMO survey, 39.9% of 22,100 planned recruitment projects for salaried commercial attachés are considered hard to fill by employers. This figure covers the salaried sales rep, not the independent sales agent status, but it reflects general tension on sales profiles.
