they hire their HVAC engineers with muzzo
how do you hire an HVAC engineer through a recruitment agency?

A good HVAC engineer sizes an installation that holds to its stated consumption. Muzzo gives your role, from design technician to head of fluids design office, to the headhunters who place this job: they test how a profile reads a heat-load calculation. Fee of 5 to 30%, paid on hire. Leaves within 3 months: we restart the search free.
how it works
you only pay if you hire

let's talk about your role
Antoine and the Muzzo team help you scope your role and choose the right headhunters. Describe your role in the form: we'll call you back to discuss it.

one last question?
With Muzzo, you set the fee, between 5 and 30%, and you only pay it on hire: no deposit, no fixed fees. An HVAC design technician who draws networks under supervision and a head of fluids design office who owns the final validation don't take the same search. The fee follows that difficulty, and the Muzzo team helps you set it.
You have a double guarantee. If your new hire leaves within 3 months, for example because the real role (design, site or operations) doesn't match the brief, we restart the search at no cost. If we find no replacement within 4 months, we refund 50% of the fees. On average, 94% of Muzzo hires are still in post after 3 months.

the reality
an HVAC engineer is judged by real consumption, not the plan delivered
a good HVAC design technician defends their heat-load calculation
Sizing an installation means choosing between oversizing out of caution and undersizing to save money. An HVAC headhunter knows how to make these trade-offs come out at interview.
the same title covers three jobs
In a design office, the HVAC engineer designs. At an installer, they quote and run the site. At an operator, they optimise an existing installation. The headhunter starts from what your role actually does.
a hiring mistake shows up on the energy bill
A poorly sized installation uses too much energy or doesn't deliver the promised comfort, sometimes for years. The headhunter checks the projects actually sized and delivered before introducing anyone.
the roles
the HVAC profiles our headhunters go after for you
From a first role to team lead, each search goes to a headhunter who has already hired that profile.
HVAC design technician
They draw the heating, ventilation and air conditioning networks under an engineer's supervision, based on a heat-load calculation already set.
HVAC engineer
They design the installation, size the equipment and choose the technologies used, from the heat generator to the distribution networks.
energy efficiency engineer
They audit an existing building, quantify possible savings and prepare compliance with the décret tertiaire or RE2020.
HVAC project manager
At an installer, they quote the installation, run the site and hold the client relationship through to handover.
HVAC operations engineer
They run installations in service, tune their operation and look for energy savings without reducing occupant comfort.
head of fluids design office
They lead the design technicians and engineers, validate the technical choices and hold the relationship with clients on the most complex projects.
the method
an HVAC headhunter, not an agency that does everything
HVAC is judged by an installation that holds its consumption. So the method starts from what the role has to size.
we define what the role has to size
Heating, ventilation, air conditioning, heat pumps, energy retrofit: the brief describes the type of installation and the target regulation (décret tertiaire, RE2020).
a headhunter who places in HVAC
From more than 2,500 selected headhunters, your role goes to those who place the most people in fluids design offices and energy performance.
a heat-load calculation checked with references
The headhunter asks the profile for a project they really sized, the assumptions kept and the consumption observed once delivered, then cross-checks that version with a former manager.

hiring an HVAC engineer: what you need to know

The HVAC engineer designs a building's heating, ventilation and air conditioning installations, and checks that they will hold to their stated consumption. It is a job of trade-offs: comfort, installation cost, running cost and regulatory constraints often pull in different directions.
An HVAC headhunter knows how to make these trade-offs come out: what heat-load calculation, what equipment chosen and why, what savings actually observed. You meet profiles who have sized real installations, not just learned the standards.

In a design office, the HVAC engineer designs the installation and writes the technical documents for the contract. At an installer, the project manager quotes, runs the site and guarantees proper execution. At an operator or an asset manager, the engineer optimises installations already in service.
State this position in the brief: a designer who has never followed a site and a project manager who has never sized a heat-load calculation do not cover the same role, even if both call themselves 'HVAC engineer'.

The décret tertiaire requires existing tertiary buildings to cut energy consumption, and RE2020 sets requirements for new buildings. Both texts push demand towards profiles able to audit an existing building, not just design a new one.
An HVAC engineer who masters energy auditing and retrofitting existing buildings becomes rarer than one who can only design new ones. State in the brief whether the role covers design, retrofit, or both.

The CV lists thermal simulation software and regulations. The interview has to show something else, the ability to justify an equipment choice against a tight budget and a real comfort need.
A practical case works well: a typical building, a budget constraint, and twenty minutes to propose an equipment choice and defend it. The headhunter does this first screen before introducing anyone, and checks with references the installations actually delivered.
HVAC design or HVAC maintenance: which role should you hire?
The HVAC engineer designs or optimises an installation, upstream or throughout its life. The HVAC maintenance technician works on site to maintain and repair equipment already installed: boilers, heat pumps, chillers.
The two jobs rarely overlap in a single role. For a maintenance and repair hire, see our HVAC maintenance technician page.
your questions about hiring an HVAC engineer
According to Apec, the median for energy and environmental engineering managers (HVAC included) is €43k under 35 and €60k over 45 (2025 edition). With line-management responsibility, for example leading a fluids design office, the median rises to €50k, against €44k without a team to manage.
A little. According to Apec, the median for energy and environmental engineering managers is €48k gross a year in the Paris region, against €45k in the rest of France (2025 edition). The gap stays moderate, which makes a search outside Paris credible for most roles.
Yes. The energy retrofit of the tertiary and residential building stock, driven by the décret tertiaire and RE2020, is pushing demand towards profiles able to audit existing buildings as well as design new ones, in design offices as well as at installers and operators.
With a real case rather than a list of software. Ask them to propose a heating or air-conditioning setup for a typical building, with a given budget, and defend their choice. Our headhunters run this first test and check with references the installations actually delivered.
