how do you hire a Chief Data Officer through a recruitment agency?

A Chief Data Officer is judged by the governance they put in place: data quality, GDPR compliance, data teams aligned with business strategy. Muzzo gives your role to the headhunters who hire the most data leaders. Fee of 5 to 30%, paid on hire. Leaves within 3 months: we restart the search free.

how it works

let's talk about your role

one last question?

With Muzzo, you set the fee, between 5 and 30%, and you only pay it on hire: no deposit, no fixed fees. A first CDO structuring governance from scratch and a group CDO consolidating multiple subsidiaries don't take the same search. The fee follows that difficulty, and the Muzzo team helps you set it.

You have a double guarantee. If your new hire leaves within 3 months, for example because the real mandate doesn't match the brief, we restart the search at no cost. If we find no replacement within 4 months, we refund 50% of the fees. On average, 94% of Muzzo hires are still in post after 3 months.

the reality

a Chief Data Officer is judged by the data the company can finally use

01

a good CDO builds structure before producing

Data quality, governance, GDPR compliance: these workstreams don't show up on a dashboard. The headhunter checks what the profile actually put in place, not just the tools deployed.

02

the CDO isn't answering job ads, they're on the executive committee

They're already negotiating their mandate and resources with the board. A data headhunter knows when and how to reach them, and what they need to move.

03

a hiring mistake shows up across the whole data strategy

Governance never laid down, data teams staying siloed, GDPR compliance fragile: the headhunter checks which governance workstreams were actually led before introducing anyone.

the roles

the data leadership profiles our headhunters go after for you

From the first CDO structuring a company's data to the director sitting on the executive committee, each search goes to a headhunter who has already hired that profile.

  1. Chief Data Officer

They lead the company's data and AI strategy, governance and GDPR compliance, and manage the data teams. The most requested role.

  2. Director of data governance

They structure data quality, documentation and access rules, often before a full-time CDO arrives.

  3. Data compliance and protection manager (GDPR)

They drive data compliance day to day, working directly with the data protection officer.

  4. Group CDO

They consolidate data strategy across multiple subsidiaries and become the go-to person for the executive committee and shareholders.

  5. Scale-up CDO

They lay the first foundations of data governance in a fast-growing company, often with no existing team.

the method

a data leadership headhunter, not a generic tech recruiter

A CDO is judged by the governance they build. So the method starts from what that governance must cover.

01

we define what the data governance must cover

Data quality, GDPR compliance, teams to federate, mandate at the executive committee: the brief describes the real scope of the role.

02

a headhunter who hires data leaders

From more than 2,500 selected headhunters, your role goes to those who hire the most CDOs and data leaders.

03

data governance verified before the interview

The headhunter asks the profile to walk through a governance workstream they led: its scope, obstacles they faced, what the board retained from it. Then they cross-check with references.

hiring a Chief Data Officer: what you need to know

why use a headhunter to hire a Chief Data Officer?

The Chief Data Officer turns a company's data into a usable asset: they set quality rules, governance and GDPR compliance, and federate teams that previously worked in silos. Good profiles are already in post, on the board, and don't answer job ads.

A data leadership headhunter knows how to reach them and ask the right questions: what mandate, what budget, what place in the organisation. This page covers the CDO role itself; for all data and AI trades, see our data and AI page.

why use a headhunter to hire a Chief Data Officer?

CDO or IT director: what's the difference?

The CDO leads data strategy and governance: quality, compliance, use by business units. The IT director leads all information systems: infrastructure, applications, security. In a mid-sized company, the two roles are sometimes combined in one post.

Decide the scope before launching the search: an IT director who also must govern data and a full-time CDO don't recruit from the same profiles.

CDO or IT director: what's the difference?

first CDO at a company or group CDO: what changes?

In a company hiring its first CDO, the role often starts from scratch: no formalised governance, data scattered between teams, a board discovering the issues. You need a profile who can build the rules and convince internally. In a group, the CDO consolidates subsidiaries and governance already laid elsewhere.

According to Apec, pay varies little with size beyond a certain threshold: 49 k€ median below 250 employees and 56 k€ above, for the family covering the CDO. What changes mostly is the breadth of the mandate to give.

how do you assess a Chief Data Officer at interview?

The CV lists certifications and governance tools. The interview must show something else: the ability to get data rules adopted by teams who don't see their value, and to defend a budget in front of the board.

A short case study works well: a real governance workstream, the obstacles, and ten minutes to explain how you cleared them. The headhunter does this first screen before introducing anyone, and checks with references the workstreams the profile says they led.

which sector hires the most Chief Data Officers?

According to Apec, the family covering the CDO commands the highest salary in banking and insurance (73 k€ median), driven by strong regulatory requirements on data, against 55 k€ in general retail.

For volume, France Travail's 2026 BMO survey counts 2,330 recruitment projects in the broad category of project managers and IT service directors (45.9% judged difficult), concentrated in Paris, Lyon and Toulouse. It doesn't single out the CDO, still a rare role, but it shows where IT leadership is concentrated.

your questions about hiring a Chief Data Officer

Apec doesn't publish a range specific to the CDO, but to the Big Data family citing it explicitly: salary varies mostly by sector, from 55 k€ median in retail to 73 k€ in banking and insurance (2025 edition). Company size weighs less than sector.

The CDO leads data strategy and governance, the IT director leads all information systems. If your current IT director already manages data without a dedicated governance mandate, a CDO can complement the leadership team rather than replace them. Clarify the scope in the brief.

No. The CDO leads data compliance at strategic level, working with the data protection officer who holds the legal expertise. The two roles are often distinct beyond a certain company size.

Through a real case rather than a governance CV. Our headhunters ask the profile to walk through a governance workstream they led, the obstacles they faced and how they cleared them, then verify that workstream with references.
