one last question?
With Muzzo, you set the fee, between 5 and 30%, and you only pay it on hire: no deposit, no fixed fees. A junior analyst and an investment manager who already sits on several boards don't take the same search. The fee follows that difficulty, and the Muzzo team helps you set it.
You have a double guarantee. If your new hire leaves within 3 months, for example because the portfolio assigned doesn't match the brief, we restart the search at no cost. If we find no replacement within 4 months, we refund 50% of the fees. On average, 94% of Muzzo hires are still in post after 3 months.

the reality
an investment manager is judged by the holding they help grow
a good investment manager follows a portfolio, not job ads
They're sitting on the board of a holding or deep in sourcing a new deal. They aren't looking for a job. A private equity headhunter knows when and how to approach them.
a strong deal flow doesn't make an investment manager
The role means sitting on a holding's board and weighing in on its decisions, long after signing. The headhunter tests that long-term follow-up, not just the sourcing.
a hiring mistake shows up in the quarterly report
A poorly followed holding, late reporting, a badly prepared exit. The headhunter checks the holdings actually followed before introducing anyone.
the roles
the private equity profiles our headhunters go after for you
From analyst to experienced investment manager, each search goes to a headhunter who has already hired that profile.
private equity analyst
They build the valuation models, prepare due diligence and follow a first portfolio of deals in sourcing.
private equity associate
They run an investment case end to end, from first contact to the investment committee presentation.
investment manager
They follow several holdings, sit on boards and prepare the exit. The most requested role in private equity funds.
venture capital investment manager
They invest in young companies, support founders and assess a higher risk than in classic private equity.
private debt manager
They structure and follow non-bank financing, often for buyouts or growth deals.
the method
a private equity headhunter, not an agency that does everything
An investment manager is judged by a portfolio's performance, not a single deal. So the method starts from what the role has to follow.
we scope the fund type and the level
Private equity, venture capital or private debt, analyst to experienced level, deal size: the brief describes the holdings the role will have to follow.

portfolio follow-up tested before the interview
The headhunter asks the profile to detail a holding they actually followed: the sourcing, the decisions made at board level, the exit prepared. Then they cross-check with references.

hiring an investment manager: what you need to know

The investment manager runs an investment case, then stays in the fund to follow the holding: board membership, reporting, preparing the exit. Good profiles are in post, busy following a portfolio, and don't answer job ads.
A private equity headhunter knows how to approach them and asks the right questions: what type of fund, what deal size, what their real role is at board level. This page covers the role within investment funds; for deal advisory on the seller or buyer side, see our M&A dealmaker page.

An analyst builds the models and prepares due diligence. An associate runs an investment case end to end. An experienced investment manager follows several holdings and sits on boards.
That choice sets the budget for the role. According to Apec, the median for banking operations and financial markets managers rises from €58k with no budget of their own to €60k with a direct portfolio. Decide the level in the brief before talking salary, not the other way round.

In classic private equity, the investment manager takes over mature companies with a growth or succession plan. In venture capital, they invest in young companies and support founders who are still building their model, a higher risk. In private debt, they structure non-bank financing, a role closer to lending than to equity ownership.
These three profiles aren't hired from the same pool: the brief has to specify the fund type before launching the search.

The CV lists amounts raised and deals cited. The interview has to show something else: what the profile actually decided at a holding's board, and how they handled a deal that was deteriorating.
A short case study works well: a holding's reporting showing a delay, ten minutes to propose a decision. The headhunter does this first screen before introducing anyone, and checks with references the holdings the profile says they followed.

At a small asset manager, the investment manager does a bit of everything: sourcing, structuring, follow-up, investor reporting. At a large fund, teams are more specialised and the role often focuses on portfolio follow-up.
According to the AMF, France had 695 licensed portfolio management companies as of 31 December 2024, a pool of employers that has been shrinking for several years: the brief has to specify the target firm size before launching the search.
your questions about hiring an investment manager
According to Apec, 62% of banking operations and financial markets managers receive variable pay, for a median amount of €5,000 (2025 edition). That's more than managers overall, where this applies to 50% of profiles.
A little. According to Apec, banking operations and financial markets managers with a budget of their own earn a median of €60k gross a year, against €58k with no budget of their own (2025 edition). The gap stays modest: it's mostly the fund type that makes the difference.
The investment manager stays in the fund after the deal: they follow the holding on the board and prepare the exit. The M&A dealmaker advises on a deal for a client, then moves to the next one. For the second profile, see our M&A dealmaker page.
The investment manager invests in companies and follows holdings over the long run. The quantitative analyst works on financial markets, with statistical models and portfolios of listed assets. The two roles share little common talent pool despite their apparent closeness.
With a real case rather than a list of deals. Ask them to describe a holding in difficulty, the decision taken at board level and what it changed for the company. Our headhunters run this first test and check the holdings mentioned with references.
