let's talk about your role
Antoine and the Muzzo team help you scope your role and choose the right headhunters. Describe your role in the form: we'll call you back to discuss it.

one last question?
With Muzzo, you set the fee, between 5 and 30%, and you only pay it on hire: no deposit, no fixed fees. A junior management accountant preparing a branch's reporting and a group management accountant consolidating twelve subsidiaries don't take the same search. The fee follows that difficulty, and the Muzzo team helps you set it.
You have a double guarantee. If your new hire leaves within 3 months, for example because the real scope doesn't match the brief, we restart the search at no cost. If we find no replacement within 4 months, we refund 50% of the fees. On average, 94% of Muzzo hires are still in post after 3 months.

the reality
a management accountant is judged by the decisions their numbers drive
a good management accountant is busy closing the month, not reading job ads
They own the budget, the forecasts and the monthly close. They aren't looking for a job. A finance headhunter knows when and how to approach them.
a tidy spreadsheet doesn't make a management accountant
The role means explaining the numbers to a site or branch manager, and changing their mind. The headhunter tests that conversation, not just the tools.
a hiring mistake shows up in the next budget
Wrong forecasts, unexplained variances, a leadership team deciding without visibility. The headhunter checks the budgets built and the closes delivered before introducing anyone.
the roles
the management control profiles our headhunters go after for you
From a first role to a team lead, each search goes to a headhunter who has already hired that profile.

They produce the reporting, make the data reliable and prepare the close. A first or second role, often after a business school or a finance master's.

industrial management accountant

They lead the team, set the KPIs and become the go-to person for the CEO or the CFO.

the method
a finance headhunter, not an agency that does everything
Management control is judged by what the numbers change. So the method starts from what the role has to shed light on.
we define what the role has to shed light on
Margin by site, production costs, subsidiary consolidation, forecasts: the brief describes the decisions the management accountant will feed, and for whom.
a headhunter who places management accountants
From more than 2,500 selected headhunters, your role goes to those who place the most people in finance and management control.
variance analysis tested before the interview
The headhunter asks the profile to explain a real variance they handled: its cause, how they presented it, what management decided next. Then they cross-check with references.
hiring a management accountant: what you need to know
why use a headhunter to hire a management accountant?
A management accountant turns numbers into decisions: they build the budget, track variances, revise forecasts and explain to operational teams why the margin moves. Good profiles are in post, busy with monthly closes, and don't answer job ads.
A finance headhunter knows how to approach them and asks the right questions: what scope, which budgets built, which tools, which stakeholders. This page covers the management accountant role itself; for the wider function (finance and admin managers, administration), see our management control page.

junior, experienced or head of: which management accountant should you hire?
A junior management accountant produces the reporting, makes the data reliable and prepares the close. An experienced one builds the budget with operational teams and defends their forecasts in front of management. A head of management control leads the team, chooses the KPIs and becomes the CEO's go-to person.
That choice sets the budget for the role. According to Apec, the median rises from €49k under 35 to €60k over 45, and managing a team lifts it from €53k to €59k. Decide the level in the brief before talking salary, not the other way round.

how do you assess a management accountant at interview?
The CV lists tools: ERP, spreadsheets, reporting tools. The interview has to show something else: the ability to find the cause of a variance and make someone who isn't in finance understand it.
A short case study works well: a budget, actuals, three lines that drift, and twenty minutes to explain. The headhunter does this first screen before introducing anyone, and checks with references the budgets and closes the profile says they delivered.
first management accountant in an SME or reinforcing a team: what changes?
In an SME, the first management accountant often starts from scratch: no formal budget, scattered data, a founder who decides on instinct. You need an autonomous profile who can build the tools and win people over. In a group, the management accountant joins a team, procedures and a reporting calendar that are already set.
Pay, on the other hand, varies little with company size: according to Apec, a €52k median below 250 employees and €54k above. What changes is the profile to look for. For Batibig, a construction group, our headhunters hired several management accountants, including a junior one.
where should you hire a management accountant: Paris or the regions?
The pay gap between Paris and the rest of France is moderate for this job: according to Apec, a €56k median in the Paris region and €52k elsewhere. A search outside Paris is therefore credible for a remote site or a group that accepts part-time remote work.
Competition between employers, however, is concentrated. In France Travail's 2026 BMO survey, the broad category of administrative, accounting and finance managers counts 2,410 planned hires in the Paris labour area, 610 in Paris Ouest La Défense, 340 in Lille, 260 in central Lyon and 210 in Toulouse. It doesn't single out management control, but it shows where these profiles are most in demand.
your questions about hiring a management accountant
According to Apec, management control managers under 35 earn a median of €49k gross a year, with 80% between €39k and €60k (2025 edition). The median reaches €56k between 35 and 45, then €60k above that. These amounts include variable pay.
A little. According to Apec, the median for management control managers is €56k gross a year in the Paris region, where 80% earn between €44k and €85k. In the rest of France, it is €52k, with 80% between €41k and €70k (2025 edition). The gap is mostly at the top of the range.
According to Apec, management control managers with line-management responsibility earn a median of €59k gross a year, with 80% between €47k and €85k. Those who manage nobody are at €53k (2025 edition). State the team size in the brief: it changes the profile to look for.
The management accountant looks ahead: budget, forecasts, margins, operational decisions. The financial controller makes the accounts, consolidation and shareholder reporting reliable. In an SME, one profile often does both. For financial control and finance leadership roles, see our finance page.
With a real case rather than a list of tools. Ask them to walk you through a variance they analysed: the cause they found, how they presented it, the decision taken next. Our headhunters run this first test and check the budgets and closes they mention with references.
