they hire their customer success teams with muzzo
how do you hire a head of customer success through a recruitment agency?
A good head of customer success is judged by the NRR they improve. Muzzo gives your role to the headhunters who place most customer success leaders: they test a structured CSM team and managed churn. Fee of 5 to 30%, paid on hire. Leaves within 3 months: we restart the search free.

one last question?
With Muzzo, you set the fee, between 5 and 30%, and you only pay it on hire: no deposit, no fixed fees. A head of customer success for the first time and a VP customer success at an international scale-up don't take the same search. The fee follows that difficulty, and the Muzzo team helps you set it.
You have a double guarantee. If your new hire leaves within 3 months, for example because the real team size doesn't match the brief, we restart the search at no cost. If we find no replacement within 4 months, we refund 50% of the fees. On average, 94% of Muzzo hires are still in post after 3 months.

the reality
a head of customer success is judged by NRR, not team size
a good head of customer success already improves their NRR
They aren't job hunting: they're busy moving net revenue retention. A headhunter who covers customer success teams knows when and how to reach them.
managing a CSM team is not managing a book of accounts
The role means hiring, equipping and upskilling CSMs, not just tracking accounts. The headhunter tests that shift to management, not just retention history.
a hiring mistake shows up in next quarter's churn
A poorly led team lets renewals slip away. The headhunter checks the numbers actually held (NRR, churn, expansion) before introducing anyone.
the roles
the customer success leadership profiles our headhunters go after for you
From first hire to leading a whole function, each search goes to a headhunter who has already hired at that level.
head of customer success (first hire)
They build the function from scratch: first playbooks, first tools, first small CSM team to manage.
director of customer success
They grow an existing team, structure account segments and set retention and expansion targets.
VP customer success
They report to the board, own NRR as a company objective and work constantly with sales and product.
customer success operations manager
They equip the function: customer health scoring, reply automation, reliable retention data for everyone.
head of customer success international
They lead CSMs spread across time zones, for a software vendor selling beyond France.
the method
a headhunter who specialises in customer success, not an agency that does everything
A head of customer success is judged by the metrics they move. So the method starts from what the role needs to improve.
we define the team and metrics to improve
Team size to lead, NRR target, account segments, tools in place: the brief describes what the role must build or grow.
a headhunter who places customer success leaders
From more than 2,500 selected headhunters, your role goes to those who place the most customer success heads and directors.
NRR and churn verified, not just talk about retention
The headhunter asks for the metrics actually held by the profile's team, over what period, and cross-checks with references before introducing anyone.
hiring a head of customer success: what you need to know
why use a headhunter to hire a head of customer success?
A head of customer success runs the company's retention: they hire and lead a CSM team, set churn and expansion targets, and own those numbers in front of leadership. Good profiles are in post, busy defending their NRR in board meetings, and don't reply to job ads.
A headhunter who specialises in customer success knows how to reach them and asks the right questions: what team size do they lead, what NRR have they hit, what tools have they deployed. This page covers the leadership role itself, distinct from managing a book of individual accounts.

head of customer success or customer success manager: where does leadership start?
A customer success manager owns a book of accounts: they track product adoption and prepare renewals, account by account. A head of customer success leads multiple CSMs, builds shared processes and owns the NRR of the whole function in front of leadership.
The shift usually happens after a funding round, when the CSM team hits 3 or 4 people and needs someone to structure it. For a book-of-accounts role alone, see our customer success manager page.

NRR, churn, expansion: what should a head of customer success own?
NRR (net revenue retention) measures what a company keeps and gains from existing customers, including upsell. Churn measures what it loses. A good head of customer success doesn't just limit churn: they also build expansion, spotting accounts ready to buy more.
At interview, ask for precise figures on these three metrics, not a description of 'customer engagement': a profile who can't quantify their previous NRR probably hasn't led the function.
head of customer success or chief revenue officer: who owns renewals?
A chief revenue officer leads the whole revenue chain: acquisition, sales and retention, often with the head of customer success reporting to them. The head of customer success owns only retention and expansion of already-signed customers.
In a small company, a CRO may still oversee customer success directly without a dedicated leader. A head of customer success makes sense when the CSM team is large enough to need full-time management. For leading the whole revenue chain, see our chief revenue officer page.
how do you assess a head of customer success at interview?
The CV lists CRM tools and retention rates. The interview should show something else: the ability to build a CSM team that holds numbers over time, not just manage their own accounts well.
A short case study works well: an account showing churn signals, and how the profile would organise the team to respond. The headhunter does this first screen and checks the NRR and churn actually held with references.
your questions about hiring a head of customer success
Most earn variable pay, usually tied to NRR or team renewal rate, not individual sales. The amount depends mainly on team size and responsibility level, not a fixed scale.
Yes. We also place heads of customer success international, who lead CSMs across time zones for software vendors selling globally. State in the brief which languages and time zones matter.
A customer success manager owns a book of accounts. A head of customer success leads a CSM team and owns the NRR of the whole function. If you still have one CSM or none, start with a customer success manager.
While your CSM team stays small, a chief revenue officer can still oversee retention directly. A head of customer success makes sense when that team grows and needs dedicated, full-time management focused on NRR and churn.
